Sourcing

We prefer primary sources: peer-reviewed studies, regulator publications (TGA, FDA, European Commission), and named experts speaking on the record. Claims are linked so you can check them. Every article carries a source list. Quotes are reproduced verbatim from the cited source — we do not invent, trim or "improve" quotations.

Sun safety, always

Australia has the highest skin cancer rates in the world. Whatever we report about individual ingredients, products or regulations, The SPF Report will never discourage sun protection. Where a story might be misread that way, we say so explicitly.

Not medical advice

We report what clinicians and researchers say, with attribution. We do not give medical advice, and nothing here replaces a consultation with a qualified practitioner.

Balance and honesty flags

We have points of view — we find mineral sunscreen chemistry and traditional ingredients genuinely interesting — but enthusiasm never overrides evidence. Where the evidence for a popular idea is thin, we say so in the article, not in the fine print. Where a story is more nuanced than its headlines (and it usually is), the nuance goes in.

No brand endorsements

We do not recommend or endorse specific brands or products. Brands are named only when they are the news — recalls, regulatory actions, published test results — and are treated fairly, including their own statements.

How articles are made

Articles are researched and drafted with the assistance of AI tools, working from published sources, and are reviewed and edited by the publisher before going live. Responsibility for everything published rests with the publisher.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we fix it and note the correction on the article. Spotted an error? Tell us via Contact — we'd rather know.
