Walk down any pharmacy aisle and you'll see the divide: "mineral" sunscreens on one shelf, everything else on another. Online, the divide is sharper still, with each camp claiming the other is inferior, unsafe or both. The truth is less dramatic. Mineral and chemical sunscreens both work, both are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as listed medicines, and both are considered safe by Australia's cancer authorities. What separates them is mostly texture, feel and formulation trade-offs — not a gulf in protection or safety.
A quick note on names. "Mineral" sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as their active ingredients. "Chemical" sunscreens — more accurately called organic filters, in the chemistry sense of carbon-based — use ingredients such as avobenzone, octocrylene and homosalate. Zinc oxide is, of course, also a chemical. The labels are marketing shorthand, but they're the shorthand everyone uses, so we'll use them here.
The reflect-vs-absorb story is mostly wrong
The explanation you've probably heard goes like this: mineral filters sit on top of the skin and reflect UV like tiny mirrors, while chemical filters absorb UV and convert it to heat. It's tidy, and it's largely a myth.
Modern research shows that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide work primarily by absorbing UV radiation — around 95 per cent of the protection they provide comes from absorption, with only a small fraction genuinely reflected or scattered. In other words, both filter families do fundamentally the same job in fundamentally the same way: they capture UV energy before it reaches living skin cells and dissipate it as a tiny, imperceptible amount of heat. The mirror story appears to trace back to decades-old regulatory language that science has since moved past.
There are real mechanistic differences, though. Mineral filters are highly photostable — they don't break down under sunlight. Some organic filters, avobenzone in particular, degrade with UV exposure and need stabilising ingredients to keep working through a long day outdoors. Well-formulated modern chemical sunscreens handle this with stabilisers, but it's one reason reapplication advice exists for every sunscreen: every two hours, and after swimming or sweating, regardless of what's in the bottle.
Feel, white cast and sensitive skin
If protection is roughly a draw, the everyday experience is where the families genuinely diverge.
Chemical filters tend to produce lighter, more cosmetically elegant textures. They spread easily, disappear into most skin tones and layer well under makeup. That matters more than it sounds: a sunscreen that feels pleasant gets applied generously and often, and generous application is the single biggest factor in real-world protection.
Mineral filters, especially zinc oxide at the concentrations needed for high SPF, are heavier by nature and can leave a white or greyish cast — a genuine drawback on medium and deep skin tones, though newer formulations have narrowed the gap considerably.
Sensitive skin is the mineral camp's strongest practical argument. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are inert and very rarely irritate, which is why dermatologists often steer people with reactive skin, eczema or rosacea towards them, and why baby sunscreens are typically mineral. Some organic filters can sting around the eyes, particularly when sweat carries product into them — a familiar complaint from runners and anyone applying chemical sunscreen close to the lash line. If that's you, a mineral formula (or a mineral one just for the face) is a reasonable fix. It's a comfort issue, not a safety one.
Absorption studies, reef claims and regulation
Two controversies keep this debate alive, and both deserve a careful reading.
First, absorption. In 2019 and 2020, US Food and Drug Administration researchers published trials in JAMA showing that several organic filters — including avobenzone, oxybenzone and homosalate — are absorbed into the bloodstream at levels above the FDA's threshold for requesting further safety data. That finding is real, and it's why the FDA has asked manufacturers for more research. What the studies did not show is harm. The authors themselves stressed that absorption alone doesn't mean an ingredient is unsafe, and urged people to keep using sunscreen while the data is gathered. The TGA reviewed the same evidence and has kept these filters approved, and Cancer Council Australia's position is that chemical sunscreens are safe to use. Absorption is a question being studied, not a verdict.
Second, reefs. Hawaii's high-profile ban on oxybenzone and octinoxate followed laboratory studies showing these filters can damage coral larvae at very low concentrations. But the evidence base is genuinely contested: several marine scientists have pointed out that many lab studies used concentrations far higher than those measured around real reefs, and that climate-driven ocean warming remains the overwhelming cause of coral bleaching. "Reef safe" on a label, meanwhile, is an unregulated marketing term in Australia — it has no agreed definition. If reef impact worries you, choosing a zinc-based sunscreen for ocean swims is a low-cost precaution. Just don't mistake it for settled science.
On regulation, Australians are unusually well served. Sunscreens sold here as primary sun protection are regulated by the TGA as therapeutic goods — a stricter regime than the cosmetic rules covering much of the world. Every listed sunscreen, mineral or chemical, must meet the same SPF testing, broad-spectrum and stability standards, and the TGA has repeatedly reviewed the safety of both filter families, including the nanoparticle forms of zinc and titanium used to reduce white cast. Its conclusion to date: the evidence doesn't show these particles penetrate into living skin cells in meaningful amounts.
The answer experts keep landing on
Strip away the marketing and the two camps converge on one boring, liberating conclusion — the one Cancer Council keeps repeating: the best sunscreen is the one you'll actually wear, generously, every day, and reapply. An SPF50+ broad-spectrum, water-resistant, TGA-listed sunscreen protects you whether its filters are mineral, chemical or a blend of both — and plenty of Australian formulas are exactly that blend. Pick the texture you don't have to talk yourself into. That decision matters far more than which shelf it came from.
